Platonics

Although I have a very eclectic taste in music, I know what I like, and more often than not, I know it very quickly. That was certainly the case with "Veruca". It opens with a swirling synth, but the moment I heard Aarin’s vocals, I was like a deer in the headlights. There’s something in her voice that evokes the 70s, reminiscent of Annie Haslam from Renaissance or, at times, Karen Carpenter. Her singing carries a pureness and clarity that is utterly mesmerising. The track is barely over two minutes, yet in that short time, it still manages to pack a punch.

She Was Right flows directly from the previous track, almost feeling like a continuation, until it finds its own stride. The song is steeped in regret and sorrow, yet it balances on a knife’s edge, carried by vocals that soar and make you forget the pain they’re documenting.

"Still Too Soon" is an interesting song. If I read between the lines, it's about taking things to the next level, but something is holding her back. Maybe it's a continuation of the song before, which then makes all the more sense. Maybe it's just that, one relationship ending and the fear of starting another. But again the vocals make you forget the depth and complexity and you find yourself just wanting to hear more.

"Historical Event" the longest track on the EP at just over five minutes, offers even more to explore. I’m no expert on political matters, but the sentiment, bitterness, and sorrow come through clearly. This isn’t a song about lecturing or browbeating, it’s about airing feelings, expressing frustration, and documenting history. Its tone differs from the other tracks, not in a negative way, but it feels more produced, with Aarin’s vocals slightly elevated, revealing yet another dimension of her artistry.

"Lucky" closes the album on a more upbeat note, radiating the unmistakable excitement of the early stages of love. It captures that exhilarating feeling of wanting to be with someone all the time, the thrill of connection, and the hopeful energy that comes with new affection. The track leaves the listener on a high, a perfect contrast to some of the album’s more introspective moments, and lingers like the warm afterglow of a crush.

This EP is a compelling showcase of Aarin’s versatility and emotional range, with each track offering something distinct yet cohesive. Throughout, Aarin’s vocals remain the constant. Pure, clear, and utterly mesmerising, guiding the listener through a journey that is as emotionally rich as it is musically engaging.
