Passed Self

Not sure I can keep up with Six Missing's prolific release schedule, with 11 singles, one EP, and three albums already released in 2026.

Every time I cue up one of their releases, I know I'm in for a journey of one description or another. I always feel a little guilty reviewing their music, as I generally like to write while I'm listening. That guilt becomes even more pronounced when the music seems to be quietly urging you to stop what you're doing, sit back, and simply absorb the experience.

The EP opens with "Morning Routine", a shimmering soundscape that, when you close your eyes, almost allows you to see the sun slowly rising in the distance and it's that I get rather than the sorrow of mourning. There's a warmth and serenity here that makes you want to stretch slowly and enjoy those first gentle rays of morning sunlight. Everything feels deliberate, unhurried, and free from stress. I realise that sounds like I'm auditioning for voice-over work, but I think you get the gist.

"Pulling Together" continues that early morning atmosphere, complete with birdsong and the subtle sounds of life unfolding around you. It's the kind of track that invites observation rather than action. I particularly love the bass notes as they gently undulate through the mix and seem to resonate somewhere deep inside. This feels like a piece more concerned with the journey than the destination, eventually fading away and allowing nature itself to reclaim centre stage.

Things take a slight turn with "A Dance", which opens with a more traditional synth and keyboard phrase that immediately brought Tangerine Dream to mind. The track has a stronger sense of momentum than the previous pieces, but it never loses sight of the atmosphere that defines the EP. It's a different direction, but one I'm more than happy to follow.

There's a certain irony when "Eyes Closed" begins, because that was exactly my instinct. The calming sound of water emerges almost immediately, and water has always held a special place for me. Whether it's a river, lake, or the sea, there's something deeply restorative about being close to it. The track captures that feeling beautifully, creating a space where thoughts can drift freely. It's peaceful without becoming static, and immersive without demanding your attention. Instead, it gently invites you to let go for a few minutes and simply exist within the music.

The EP closes with "And Again", a more melodic piece driven primarily by piano before gradually being joined by additional textures and soundscapes. At just over a minute and a half, it's relatively brief, but it provides a fitting conclusion and leaves behind a lingering sense of calm long after the final notes have faded.

This is another excellent release from Six Missing. That said, I couldn't help but feel that the shorter running times slightly limit the immersive quality that this style of music can often achieve. Given more space, some of these ideas could perhaps have developed even further. Still, as an introduction to ambient and soundscape-driven music, this EP is highly accessible and rewarding. For anyone curious about the genre but unsure where to begin, this would be a very good place to start.
