Talking 2 Strangers

I think it’s that time of year, as we start to leave winter, when thoughts turn to summer and the great weather ahead. This EP from Coyote Theory perfectly exemplifies that feeling.

The EP opens with "So Sweet", and my immediate thought was of the close of a summer’s day, when you’re toast and just want to chill and kick back with a beer or two… or lemonade, if that’s your poison.

"Moonlight" has that same underlying vibe, but it's even more chill. You could say it's the moon light's influence, but it's like the hopeful optimism has been replaced by satisfaction.

As soon as the synth note opened "Let Me Down", I was a little hesitant and I think for me I was right to be. It's a more upbeat track and has a stronger pop sensibility. It's not a bad track by any means, it's just not my kind of track, though I did like the synth break about two thirds of the way in.

"Stranger Than" has a more indie sound and I think I prefer that as a counterbalance to the opening two tracks. It still doesn't quite grab me like the first two tracks, but it does give a nice alternative sound.

This EP grabbed me right out of the gate with the first two tracks, which I really enjoyed. The latter two, while good songs in their own right, didn’t grab me in the same way. That said, I think the EP overall showcases the band nicely and gives a flavour of what they’re about. It will be interesting to see what direction they take with their next EP or album, but I’ll be sure to keep an ear out.
