Virga III

It's hard for anyone who isn't into this type of music to understand that it's more than the sum of its parts. I put the first track of this album, "A.M." on, and I was transported, with the help of headphones, into somewhere calm, quiet, and safe, where the music gently cascades over you and leaves you feeling like there's nowhere else you'd rather be. That's the power of music.

There's a lot on this album that reminds me of both Vangelis and Maurice Jarre, and no, I don't mean his famous son, Jean-Michel Jarre. Maurice Jarre, I think, composed one of the greatest pieces for a movie, in this case Witness and his track "Building the Barn". In my head, it still evokes that sense of hard work and community, but it is also an absolutely fantastic piece of music in itself, and one I still play often.

Anyway, I digress. With this album, there's that sense of purpose, like the album is very much a complete work rather than a disparate collection of songs. As I've mentioned before, it's hard to break albums like this down to a track-by-track description, as I think you have to really feel the music rather than hear it described.

I would like to, however, point out a couple of pieces for differing reasons. "Remains" has a very interesting mix, where it's like the music is in front of you, and I don't mean literally. In previous tracks, it's like you are in the track, fully centred, here, though, there's a strange sense of being an observer. Now, I'm not sure if that sounds crazy, but it's there, for me at least.

"Virga III" I think reminded me most of Vangelis. There's the all-encompassing synth sound layered upon something more ethereal, resulting in something that fills your thoughts. There's also a drone-like quality far back in the mix that serves as a kind of mantra focal point. Beautiful, but for me, way too short. I could listen to that for... let's just say a long time.

This, for me, is a truly amazing album. For anyone who thinks they're not into this type of music, I think this could be a nice introduction and a good place to start. It commands your time and patience, and I'd suggest your undivided attention. It truly is a journey into sound, and one that is highly rewarding.
