The Strumbellas—Burning Bridges Into Dust

I love it when I put on a new release and, from the very first track, it grabs me completely. That instant connection is something special, the thrill of knowing you’re about to experience music that truly resonates. Genres might try to define it, offering a rough guide to what you can expect, but the best music always breaks free of those boundaries, revealing itself as something far more than a simple label can describe.

The EP opens with "Hard Lines", a track that immediately sets the tone for what follows. It’s upbeat, melodic, and infectious. Before long, that irresistible foot-tapping urge kicks in. Best of all, it gives me the perfect excuse to wave the Canadian flag with pride and showcase another cracking homegrown talent to the world.

I’m sure the sentiment behind “Hanging Out In My Head” is one most of us can relate to at some point, spending too much time alone with our own thoughts can easily lead to getting lost in those ever decreasing circles. That said, while the lyrics tap into that introspective space, the track itself is anything but downbeat. It’s an energetic, uplifting banger, the kind that makes me close my eyes and picture a crowd singing along in unison to that powerful chorus.

In "Take Me Down", the tempo may ease up a notch, but that only adds to the song’s charm rather than detracting from it. If anything, it gives the EP a more rounded feel, revealing a slightly different, more nuanced side of the band.

It’s funny how a simple melody can immediately signal that you’re in for something good, and that’s exactly the case with "Skin Of My Teeth" Opening with a delicate piano line, it quickly builds into another absolute belter of a track.

Another more contemplative moment comes with "Maybe It’s Me", a track that helps balance the EP, serving as yin to many of the upbeat yang tracks. While it stands out in its introspective tone, it’s not the only track to explore this reflective side, showing that the band is equally comfortable weaving quieter, more thoughtful moments into their energetic sound.

The EP closes with "Come Back Around", yet another strong track that leaves a lasting impression. It carries a very solid feel, coming across as both well-crafted and purposeful, a fitting finale that rounds off the EP with confidence and polish.

This is very much a strong EP, and I have to say there isn’t a single duff track on it. Perhaps a slower, more contemplative song could have added another layer, offering an even broader glimpse into the band’s range, but that’s hardly a criticism. If anything, it’s just a thought of how the EP could serve as an even richer sampler of what’s to come.
